is this the dumbest thing they ever have done?
Microsoft sucks ass, but at least its not a mac.
Ahahaha wow. They've really dropped the ball. optical discs are still too practical to phase out because people will have CD players in their cars for next 40 years if they buy any car that was made up to this date.
people will be using iPod in their cars... no need for CDs....
i have plug ins for one in my car
dvd's? blu rays? can people just download anything and then just save it in a hard drive or a usb memory?? what is this dark ages???
and i take great offense to that...
you will not get a sammich.
Microsoft says DVD and Blu-Ray are being phased out. But will sell the new OS in a retail box containing a... oh... one of them whatcha-ma-call-it's that are being phased out.
Not so fast. The new Macbook Pro isn't going to have an optical disc drive either.
However there's a simple solution. Buy an external.
What about software? is this about removing the codecs to play DVD and Bluray?
If so that is fucking stupid, it's not like it's too much to ask for to have with the Operating System, it's like when they deleted all the compatibility for MS DOS programs
They didn't have to, but they did, and they made a whole catelogue of awesome old games and things no longer functional.
Now you have to use Dosbox, and if you're like most people who have never used DOS you would greatly prefer just clicking the exe in normal windows and run it without learning C prompt commands.
This may be just an excuse to go all on the cloud digital so they can control who uses what and keep them plugged in all the time.
MOST PEOPLE DON'T FLUSH THE TOILETS, DOES THAT MEAN WE SHOULD DO AWAY WITH TOILET LEVERS????
JUST LET THE SHIT PILE UP IN THE BOWL?
OR OUR BOWELS ONCE IT BECOMES FULL TO THE BRIM?
And that External, thanks for getting me back on track.
Software should stay, but cutting costs to keep the sale price down on new PC's and laptops by not having an optical drive is fine, so long as they still support playing movies and shit from a plug in external drive.
mod it motherfuckers
I don't see why this is a problem. USB drives are so cheap now we could practically sell video games on them. Instead of a Windows CD/DVD/BlueRay you get a Windows USB drive. And nothing of value was lost.
This is even more retarded than Nintendo removing Gamecube support from the Wii, even though both systems are the exact same hardware.
I would imagine if you were to download an eXPerience version of Win8 from a torrent site, it will have the disc playback put back in, so nobody here should really give a shit. How many of us would actually BUY software?
That's quite ingenious, actually.
If you want to play DVDs just download VLC. They're just not supporting playing DVDs & Co. on Windows Media Center / Player because they have to pay jewgolds to their jewish license overlords. It doesn't mean the operating system is incapable of playing DVDs, it just means you have to download third party software to play them. I think it's a piss poor move, but really now, optical media is a dying medium. In the long run, it'll be a good business decision. I for one applaud their contribution to the death of optical media.
I have my copy of win 7 on a usb drive. Everything else is important is backed up on another thumbdrive.
Haven't had a working CD/DVD drive in the last 5 years, there's no need for it.
Would have to make the file read-only and the drive impossible to format. Otherwise some dipshit will delete their installer. Though that's not hard.
Does anybody regularly use the gamecube BC if at all?
everybody who had a gamecube and wanted a Wii and traded their gamecube for a Wii did it over 5 years ago back when the Gamecube was actually worth shit at EBgames and it took allot off the price of a Wii,
those who chose to stick with their gamecube and who haven't bought a Wii yet can now get a Wii keep their gamecube and save money.
What Sony did was stupid when it came to BC, they released it with full compatibility, then changed it to half capacity with software updates improving emulation of PS2 for BC, then they just released a new model with more GB on HDD and no BC and cut the BC updates, so those who bought a 60GB and went to the trouble of getting one specifically for BC got fucked over and left with incomplete BC with allot of notable games on the PS2 not being playable.
By the way long live optical discs tapes and paper back Books.
I said Books discs and tapes.
More like windows rape
I always lol at these comments vlc is the worst media player ever made right after mpc, The only way it could be any worse is if they used a cli interface.
The new video application looks very promising as a media center replacement tho. Im'a just use the modular embedded version and add the packages back into it.
And Bill Gate's personal fluffer comes to Microsoft's rescue once again.
Microsoft is just bitter over hd-dvd.
Anyway, people who still use optical discs for their media are not exactly on the cutting edge of technology and certainly not on the cutting edge of new operating systems.
And the only people who think this is news, are mac users.
Yeah, its a bad idea, but what are all of you complaining about? When is the last time you've actually paid for a movie?
2007 if I remember right. Anyways, what about those of us that have games on CDs and the like? If I'm not able to install Stalker on my Windows 8, I'm going to kill myself and then others.
Blu Ray discs can hold up to 128 GB of memory and makes sense over usb when a 25 GB disc cost less then 75cents. I thought windows 8 was intended for tablets anyway?
Tablet friendly, not exclusive.
