Turkish media are reporting that the only reason Kurdish civilians are getting killed is because the YPG are stopping them from leaving

Yeah I mean most groups in that situation would prefer to have the civilian shield, otherwise the superior force would just clusterbomb and level the entire area. ISIS did the same thing to protect themselves from the coalition.

I've heard more about civilians being trapped in ghouta than in afrin but that might just be bias in reporting like you posted earlier. My perception of afrin is more just a bunch of kurds who don't take shit, whereas east ghouta is just a bunch of people that live in a place that was taken over by various rebel groups

Hence the fact that Assad has already secured 25% of the ghouta in a few days while Turkey is feebly languishing to make any progress at all on afrin after over a month. Lol Turks are pathetic fucking failures.

The reason civs are trapped in Ghouta is because Syria sets up a corridor for them to escape so then the jihadis mortar that area to stop them from leaving. American media either choses not to report this, or are somehow truly ignorant of the situation, and continue to cast Assad in a bad light

Yeah they also seem to downplay the fact that some of the "rebels" are al-Qaeda affiliates.

But who in the middle east isn't, really.

Edit: are you really trying to support Assad tho? I'm pretty sure there is international agreement (excluding russia, of course) that he's been using chemical weapons against civilians.

No the US have even recently come out admitting they have no evidence of them ever using chems. Doesnt stop the media from still claiming it

Im not trying to defend Assad at all im just being realistic in saying that it doesnt make sense for him to use chemical weapons randomly in a civilian area (his civilians) when he has so many other ways of attacking the jihadists

Those same jihadists who everyone, including the US, have claimed possess and have used chemical weapons

Pretty sure the 2013 attacks were confirmed Syrian military. That's why they had to make a big show of getting rid of all their chemical weapons. Sure it doesn't make sense for Assad to use chemical weapons on his own people, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Yes a UN chemical weapons team confirmed that it was the Syrian army

That team was already in Syria over another alleged chemical weapons attack , which they hadnt proven was Syria until after this one and then just decided they both must have been Syria

If you were already being accused of using chems would you keep doing even while there were UN inspectors in tje country investigating that very thing

Assad has nothing to lose. If he wins this clusterfuck and the UN extracts him for trial, the country goes under again. If he loses, he's dead. It's in his, and the area's best interest to win.

Probably mostly as a big middle finger to the UN or whoever. Especially since shit like that is pretty hard to prove in wartime.

Being accused/investigated has never prevented a nation from continuing to whatever it was they're accused of. Russia (or china/US/NK...) hasn't stopped covertly conducting cyberwarfare against other nations, despite being repeatedly accused of and investigated for doing just that. Israeli hasn't stopped carrying out assassinations in foreign nations. Iran/Saudi Arabia/the US/etc haven't stopped funding and equipping current/potential future terrorists. Why would Assad give a fuck what western media thinks about him as long as he's winning?
Yeah, muh freedumbs aside, everytime we "liberate" some shithole from it's leader it devolves into a 10x worse clusterfuck almost immediately.

Yes but theres no point to chemical weapons usage in a civilian area when you can just as easily bomb it conventionally and avoid all the mock foreign anger about you using chems

Unless you are trying to cause terror. Remember Assad may be a shitbag but he's the shitbag Syria needs. That part of the world only responds to force. It's foolish to think western processes and solutions would be implemented because they are more efficient or less violent. "The strong horse," is the only horse they respect.

Assad is really no different than Saddam on one level, nor Kaddafi or any other Arab/muslim nation leader. Fear is a fundamental component to rule.

We were winning when I left. We were winning when Bush left. What happened? And don't give me that "oh the Iraqi's wanted us out," bullshit. In fact the Iraqi governement wanted us to stay, but the Iranian infiltrators were stirring up hatred against us. Gee surprise, the conservatives were right then.

You really can't fault us for people who lie to us. There is often no clear cut answer when it pertains to foreign policy. As much as I disagree with "enemy of my enemy is my friend," policy, sometimes that fucked up situation is the only option.

The city sure, the rest of the outskirts remains to be seen.
Likely the south portions will go to Assad at the least and form some kind of truce like in Shiek Massoud Aleppo and they may work togeather to boot Turkey after a year of Turks getting comfy and bogged back down against both Cyprus unitarians and PKK in Turkey and Iraq and after Syria closes the Damascus front. Not sure if Assad is going to go for Israel Jordan backed south rebels or Turkish backed North rebels after clearing the pockets.
I was surprised that the US bombed Russian and Assad forces going after Kobane-Manbij-Hasakah YPG, it isn't yet clear what deal if any YPG will make with Assad forces.
