I have a couple of younger sisters, our difference in taste of music is astonishing. I've been listening to/playing classic jazz lately, and I'm really starting to get into Tom Waits. Meanwhile, They're on a My Chemical Romance kick. Were they dropped when they were born and I just didn't know about it, or what? Anybody else's siblings listen to shit music?

    Yeah lol

You start with MTV bands, hop into a genre/bandwagon, and track each bands' influence until you arrive at the source where the genre is truly distilled. By then, you're a tr00 [genre] fan and no longer a poser, sticking with that type of stuff till you become old cause nothing else sounds as good as that.

13-year-olds start with Green Day haha (until they find heavier stuff)

And yet it still somehow sounds less faggy. Although that's like saying fucking arses is less gay than taking it up the arse.

After what I've seen, I've come to the conclusion youngsters are fucking gullible. Bands like MCR prey on the angst and the sensation of "unacceptance" that are normal in teens and milk them ad nauseum; proof of that is in their shitty lyrics. Now, I'm not saying this is new; I think everyone has passed for a period like that, where we feel identified with X or Y artist because it's what we are able to understand at that point. BUT we get through it, as Emily accurately stated it; we grow up and so do our tastes and preferences. The problem I find is, EVERYTHING nowadays is on this level of bullshitness, there's nowhere to go; and as I said, youngsters grow with this idea of "old music is not cool and boring" being input in their heads while they gladly swallow every shiny gold-coated shit that is presented to them. They just don't know, and they're being brainwashed to not know and not give a fuck about it.

TL;DR: It's not that they're stupid, it's just kids don't know and are conditioned to not know and not care.

I don't really mind what my brother listens to (indie rock). I can appreciate it, but I'm just not into it.

Unfortunately I never grew out of my liking shitty music phase. Admittedly at this point I don't think the lyrics are DEEP and I acknowledged the music is shit but I still like to listen to it.

Shrug, it becomes hard to say personally. I just listen to music that I personally enjoy, because shitty pop music falls into that area I don't pretend to know how to acknowledge what is a good piece of music and what is a bad one most of the time.

I see. Personally, I think there's nothing wrong about liking music we used to years ago, as long as we're not stuck into only that. I mean, when I was a teenager I was a hardcore fan of Rammstein and Marilyn Manson, and to this day I still enjoy popping a track of them; hell, if I'm in the mood I'll even blast my speakers and headbang like crazy. But now I acknowledge most of their tracks are rather cheesy, and certainly I cannot listen to only that these days as I've learned there is a whole world of sounds beyond.

TL;DR: It's ok to like music we used to before, but don't close yourself to that only; always keep your ears open for something different to what you're used to.
