After watching the movie, I picked up The Giver in hopes of getting a much more satisfying ending.

Even by the standards of the time it was written?

The time it was written is part of the problem. He spends much of the book, and the first chapters especially, referencing the theories of Sigmund Freud which today have all mostly been debunked.

I just saw this with my mom. I was shrugging and telling her 'I wonder if the book made more sense'.
From what I read online, not really.

Just finished a series of audiobooks on wwi, wwii, and korea.

The writing is pretty stiff and not that accessible, but it covers some really interesting issues in philosophy as a whole. Pretty much the point is all philosophies are flawed from the beginning, because of their initial assumptions.

The story behind the 1995 Sarin gas attack in the Tokyo subway, perpetrated by the religious cult Aum Shinrikyo and their leader Shoko Asahara.

Shoko believed that by having his cult murder people he could save their souls from accumulating bad karma, he referred to this as "Poaing". The cult generated millions of dollars murdered judges and released anthrax into tokyo for three weeks straight, unfortunately for the souls of Tokyo the grind of the spores was wrong and still lay littered all over tokyo.

They even had a Russian Mig helicopter complete with a spraying system for sarin, and on at least two attempts tried to murder the Emperor of Japan.

By far the most bizarre cult i've read about and I've read about quite a few.

Reproductive Rights and Wrongs: The Global Politics of Population Control by Betsy Hartman

I'm unimpressed. I follow the problem of perverse incentives and generally sourcing the task of controlling fertility to dictatorships. But the author commits the typical leftist whine valuing motives above outcomes.

"Blah blah blah, XYZ organization has improved their care for early childhood health, but only because it will reduce birth rates."

Last time I read Dostoyevsky was in jail. I put it back to read a biography on Castro, and the hipster in my pod yoinked it straight away. Motherfucking hipsters and their classic Russian literature.

Did you know Assasin's Creed (at least the first one) was based on this book?
