Yeah, in small, subtle ways. Like when Meru-meru looks in Kafuka's eyes somewhere in the first volume and sees only darkness. I think they planned this all along and went through with it when they were about to get canceled anyway. That's why the opening and ending videos in the anime are so dark. Actually, not that I think about it, the first animated opening is actually full of symbolism hinting at what happens in the final chapter of the manga. Kafuka pregnant, the girls chasing him with their faces replaced with the same word the way in the last chapter there us a picture of them with "Kafukka" instead of a face... stuff like that. It still pisses me off that there are a few chapters of the manga are missing online.
