Yeah, in small, subtle ways. Like when Meru-meru looks in Kafuka's eyes somewhere in the first volume and sees only darkness. I think they planned this all along and went through with it when they were about to get canceled anyway. That's why the opening and ending videos in the anime are so dark.

Actually, not that I think about it, the first animated opening is actually full of symbolism hinting at what happens in the final chapter of the manga. Kafuka pregnant, the girls chasing him with their faces replaced with the same word the way in the last chapter there us a picture of them with "Kafukka" instead of a face... stuff like that.

It still pisses me off that there are a few chapters of the manga are missing online.

Since the topic of shitty anime came up in the Dobbo thread, what anime would you recommend and which ones would you say are not worth watching?

Huh, I have a couple to recommend, but few titles come to mind that are actually good (well, in comparison to the MASSIVE compendium of bad anime after bad anime).

I'm watching Planetes right now, and I wish there were more shows like it that did "hard sci fi" right. I vastly prefer the manga over the anime though, since the latter gets bogged down with sappy and tired romance and slice-o-life elements in its adaptation. Still worth watching over a thousand others.

I might as well recommend Infinite Ryvius if I'm talking about space series and I plan to watch Twin Spica if I ever get the time to. Dennou Coil is an exceptionally great kids' series, proving how anime can be more "mature" than children's cartoons in a good way, and Kyousougiga is another gem in the medium too. Shin Sekai Yori/From the New World has some parts that can disturb people, but overall it has worldbuilding rarely seen in other works. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood was one of the first anime series I watched, and though it can be a bit simplistic to some, its writing is fantastic and near flawless in my opinion. There are other good series I can recommend that I haven't gotten to watching (like Tsuritama), but that list would probably be too long to fully write out.

The traits these series all share are that they share are that they all focus on an innovative vision or compilation of ideas (in other words, substance), they have organic, developing characters (though Fullmetal depends more on its cast's diversity), and they have incredibly human themes that are successfully conveyed through their surface. None of those series solely entertain the audience; they make watchers think and give them their time and money's worth viewing them. It helps that they separate themselves from other series in doing so.

Not worth watching? A gazillion series rehashing tired, shallow tropes and lazy writing concerning characters and plot (Strike the Blood, Arpeggio of Blue Steel, any piece of moeshit). Sadly, those generic series end up selling more than the good ones.

Relating to Dobson, there actually isn't much wrong with the series he watched (even if they're not the best), but the problem is that he never grasped any of the good content for inspiring his work, only the trashy elements, and that translated directly into what he drew.

Good, but not quite as good as the hype made it out to be.

Is a decent series, but the characters are so boring, only like two or three characters are ok and are not the three main characters; the only reason to watch the series are the titans.

The whole thing's just a rip-off of Evangelion.

The world depends on kids that have to (pilot the Eva/become titans) to fight for a short amount of time before being ejected from the neck of the (Eva/Titan).

If the (Angels/Titans) bypass the (Nerv Base/Wall), (The Third Impact/the end of humanity) will happen.

You have the coward who doesn't want to fight but has special skills (Shinji/Armin), the cold father figure (Gendo/Levi), and the emotionless but overpowered girl whose entire personality is based around another guy (Rei/Mikasa).

At some point, it's revealed that the (Eva's/Titan's) are actually (Angels/People), which (NERV/the government) knew all along.

Also both shows make it pretty obvious in which scenes they saved the budget to spend it on the action sequences but I found it more jarring in AoT than in NGE. At least NGE doesn't pretend these are heroic/epic stills.

I don't even know where I was with Det. conan, kinda mixed up the order since I couldn't find some episodes so I skipped them :/ Also once I'm through the dubbed ones I need to get used to the japanese voices... at least they still have the same names.

So stuff I recently watched: NGE(so far only the show), Samurai Champloo and currently following Space Dandy.
The latter turned out more enjoyable than it seemed at first and has some very gorgeous visuals.
The plant episode was especially stunning.

I recommend Sky Girls as well. I thought it would be a Strike Witches shit, but it was a passable experience.

Yeah, I like it. The animation quality is pretty good, the story is interesting and it just started production this year, so it's cool to have a new episode to look forward to every week
