The first chart is not inflation adjusted, hence "direct expenditure." However, compensating for inflation, each category still grew by at least 150% during the period. Inflation only halved the dollar's value during that time, but as you can see, the sums spent ballooned by several hundred percent. And people say Social Security threatens the budget...
The "Wars" on Drugs and Terror are not the cause of this rise, in my opinion, but they provide convenient excuses -- not only for all kinds of spending, but for the suspension of civil liberties.
