A federal court in Illinois has handed down the largest ever damages award in a BitTorrent case. In a default judgment defendant Kywan Fisher from Hampton, Virginia is ordered to pay $1,500,000 to adult entertainment company Flava Works for sharing 10 of their movies on BitTorrent.

It helps set a precedent for the amount of damages that these fascists seek, whether the company extracts the money from the victim or not. He's fucked if he ever tries to use the credit system or wins lottery, inherits money, etc.

Because like all businesses that rely on extortion to make money, they want to make an example out of him.

In other words he's utterly fine if he has family he can trust.

The entertainment business cannot grasp the concept of torrents and free downloading so they try to track down each downloader and fine them so the companies can get more jewgold. The entertainment business needs to learn to keep up with today's technology and try to compete with torrenting sites.

The entertainment industry has been crying about this shit since at least the 70s, when cassette tapes became readily available. They do not have the wherewithal to compete, so they try and legislate sharing out of existence. It will never happen.

Why would people who make books, comics, movies and videogames try to compete with people who make those things for free or make those things available for free? Rather, the people who make that shit for profit should do it for a lot less money since they already expect to make less money, rather then keep increasing the budgets of upcoming books/comics/movies/videogames and expecting a bigger profit despite competing with people who give away that shit for free.

Or perhaps they should try and start creating social infrastructures with which artists can collect their fees before creating the art in question allowing them to release them immediately into public domain.

That would be nice but do you honestly believe that those artists would go for that? The famous ones, I mean. Few artists want to act, write, draw or do anything unless they get a cut of all future sales. But you know what? Fuck 'em. If they can't adapt, they deserve to drown. No mercy for the vain. All these protectionist assholes do is keep society down for their own sake.

I dream of a global renaissance. A revolution that would outshine all before it. Where all of Humanity removes all constraints on thought, commerce and movement. If such a thing were to happen, we would experience an unimaginable acceleration in technological advancement and massive increase in standard of living per year per area. Alas, the mobsters must get their cut lest their cattle become self-aware.

Yes when the reality is that the industry robs them of a tiny fraction of what they could be making now. The greatest leap forward in the history of art was during the patronage system. Think about it, artists create art for the sake of creating it. Think about how shitty and lazy "artists" get when they actually are creating art for the purpose of money ala damian hirst or tom preston.

The idea I say is that we need to start thinking of ways to naturally allocate the resources to artists without the unnatural and contradictory concept of intellectual property as the artist's work relies heavily on plagerism in one degree or another IE "Good artists copy, great artists steal."

Well the internet makes such contracts obsolete. An artist can just put shit on the internet. What the Industrial Revolution did for mass production, the internet (or Digital Revolution, I guess) has done for information logistics.

Simply remove copyright. Artists will adapt or die. But once an artist does find a way to make money without copyright then everybody will want in on the action and start competing for it thus lowering the price of even that form of entertainment. God damn, I love the market.
