Well since the US/EU is actively supplying/supporting the rebels and since Russia/China are telling Assad to negotiate and appease said rebels, I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's going to be the rebels.
the rebels are only active in a few small cities
most ppl in damascus support assad
What is a "syria" ?
Depends if Assad can get over himself. If he steps down for his second, back to business. Otherwise more war, likely to draw other countries in, even if only in a sabre rattling fashion.
a terrorist colony somewhere in the desert
I doubt there's going to be a real 'revolution' here. The worst which could happen is Assad stepping down in a dramatic fashion and then installing one of his sockpuppets.
That is really the only smart move for Assad though. At least that way he might be able to maneuver into a shadow position ala Putin.
Putin never really maneuvered into a shadow position. He's even running for president (and winning the election, the very fine men and women at the Kremlin already know) sunday.
Why? I thought he stripped the Presidency of effective powers when he made himself Prime Minister.
