This is the thread for the three big Asian religions and philosophies. I seem to be really on a huge sperg fest over this shit, so I thought I'd make a thread here to post about it. Feel free to discuss said shit and put in your two cents about my weird musings.

I'm not making this an "Official thread" because that's just been done to death and isn't really *official* anything. LOL discuss Azn religion guys, k?

I kinda lol'd when I go overseas to a white guy's house and there's a fat buddha figurine in it. They always say it's "Rub his belly for prosperity". FYI, Buddha is sort of like the asian version of Jesus, he's not just some rich god who bestows prosperity. He's THE God for buddhists. He's more into piousness by leaving out all worldly possessions. And in Chinese mythology they sort of mixed this with their cultural crap - there's where you get angry buddha, fat buddha, sky buddha etc like in the Monkey King legend.

    Yes. This. 100%

Buddha Shakyamuni was poor by choice, but in terms of philosophical matters and even some alleged spiritual powers he was quite rich. The so called fat buddha was in fact a Chinese Zen monk who was thought to be the future Buddha of the age. Many end of the world cults have worshipped Maitreya Buddha in China, so this is nothing new. Maitreya is known as Miroku Bosatsu and Mile Pusa in China. The fat Buddha is called Budai.

In certain temples, some clueless foreign businessmen come and see monks for 'getting rich'. I don't know what kind of magic they do but it really gets them the money. There's how they get money to build those golden statues. It isn't really a sign of piousness anymore. Monks can be seen shamelessly looking for donations in the streets.

Yeah, that's one of the things the sangha does to make some money on the side. There's a whole religion started by Buddhist monks from Tibet who do exorcisms and other "magical" rituals. It's called Dongbajiao or the religion of the Dongba. In Dongba religion the monks are the priests and wear elaborate crowns with Buddhist gods from Tibet and Indian religions.

People give to monks for the accumulation of good karma, which isn't a joke in Asia. It's not so much a "begging" thing as it is that monks are forbidden to work for profit like the average people. Its one of the pitakka rules by which the whole sangha is to live by.

It's quite a powerful religion when done right.

No wonder it has spread to almost the whole world.

Okay, so he's too much of a pussy to do traditional things and would rather have the whole "easy-going" watered-down version of Buddhism. That's the way to go, Negi!

The version city folk and some westerners adopt for 'enlightenment' but not of one too deep. Makes you feel good compared to non-believers, it's like Lisa Simpson

What?! We go to temples regularly. Yeah we have a communist party, but the belief in buddha is something we preserved since the beginning of time.

I'm into Mahayana Buddhism myself, more specifically Zen, even more specifically Soto Zen (studying and trying to follow Dogen's writings). Mahayana is certainly not "watered down" Buddhism. It's the great vessel is set out to liberate all sentient beings, not just work on one own's liberation. Zen Buddhism could be called the offspring of Mahayana Buddhism and Taoism. But it's also a radical return to the original Buddhism. So far from being "watered down" if anything it's the very opposite of that. Buddhism became more and more about memorizing and studying texts and rituals - all theory and no practice. Zen is a radical return to pure practice.

“Above the heavens, below the earth, I alone am the world honored one.”

It's what the Buddha supposedly uttered right after being born.
It's what we can all utter after we're born into the Buddha-Dharma. The immense sea of Buddhism.

Edit: I since changed my signature, it's no longer that.

Shinto has no philosophical value really. It's a pagan religion; a religion of rituals, aesthetics, traditions and ancestors. For people of today, only Taoism and Buddhism have to offer something. But in Taoism, only what is known as "philosophical Taoism". The religious Taoism is a bunch of superstitious nonsense, like trying to achieve immortality of the body. So then what is truly good is the philosophy of Taoism and Buddhism. And Zen Buddhism is the synthesis of those two. It's the ultimate synthesis of all the wisdom of Asia. But it's very hard to study it and understand it. It's much more than reading a few koans! If anyone is interested, PM me we can discuss it in more detail. Most of my studies are Mahayana-oriented especially Chinese and Japanese, or studying the Pali Canon, the original Buddha's teachings. We can help each other and journey together.

I'm Catholic, too (at least officially).
Japanese society is everything but religious nowadays, you're right.
Even many Buddhist temples have been transformed to funeral businesses and are ran as every other business.

There's not a necessary contradiction between being Catholic and Being buddhist, btw. Someone even wrote a book named "Without Buddha I Could Not Be A Christian"
