    WIP.

Another Seven Universe drawing wip; most likely my last one because meh on the show. Only doing it for background practice. I may or may-not draw this from the other angle for a shot of the ocean. My drawing of her face is bugging me so I'll probably fix it when I continue this.

    Still digging Manga Studio 5

Returning to basics, kind of. Thought a more simplistic style of shading might suit my art better.

Just few animations that I was commissioned to do-- yes, specifically in the Tournament Fighters game's sprite style.

This is why I'm pretty afraid of doing commissions. Obviously when one is up for commissions, you kinda gotta commit to what it is that they gotta draw, and the moment they start asking for creepy shit, I don't know if I would stomach continuing the commission.

Money is nice, but is it worth killing your self-respect and reputation?

You can always put your conditions, what you draw and what you don't, in your commissions infos. usually these contains:
    • Drawings examples
    • Prices
    • Limits (how many characters in a pic, what you can/can't draw, what you will/will not draw)
    • What kind of payments you accepts (points, paypal, bank account)
    • Where to contact you (email is best, or you're okay with it, use the site's private messaging system, like dA's notes)

Well, I think I'm ready to start painting this up:

    steven universe background.

Keeping a lot of it loose because I want some freedom in the painting process. Do any of you have any last minute advice on it?

2015-08-19 00.52.28. Holy shit. It has been a long time since I've drawn anything!

Anyways, I decided to try and draw the demon girl again. It's a work in progress, but I just wanted to draw a standing position conveying some sort of intense and intimidating aura. It's still a work in progress, but anything anyone wants to add to this, a suggestion, or perhaps red-lining it.

    Anything is welcome.

At first I thought she was being handcuffed or something, until your description said otherwise. It's not a very intimidating pose, she seems more like she's trying to keep her emotions/powers under wraps.

I have a question for any artists out there.

I know that one shouldn't shade using black and white because it would make the shading look dirty and flat. I actually used to shade that way because it was easier to blend using the smudge tool, but it does make my work look dirty. How do I know what colors I should use for lighting and shading? Is there any rules on this?

Paying attention to the surrounding colors of the environment can help, since shadows can often mimic the color of the atmosphere/mood of the image, while light can often reflect back the colors of the objects or else the lightsource(for instance, daylight is actually very blue, while indoor lighting from lamps tends to be more yellowish). It'll honestly take a lot of trial and error, though.

You could try doing little 30-minute speedpaints, copying pictures you find online for study. That's what I've started doing, since I think it probably works in the same vein as doing gesture drawings and the like. That could help you get a firmer grasp on colors and values and how they work together, as I'm hoping it'll do for me.

i think black can still have a place in your art at the extreme end of shading. dali said that banishing black from your palette completely was ridiculous, but use it sparsely. this could include white too i guess.

The general rule that Ive learned (in addition to what slime suggested) Is to use the shade the opposite of the color wheel.

Example: If you use cold color schemes, use warm shadows and vice versa.

You can use the dark (almost black) versions of these hues, but if the color balance is done right, you can still see what color the shadow is.

You should generally avoid using black for shading because, as you mentioned, it makes the piece look dirtier, adding a little bit of a hue to your shading help a lot. The Smudge tool is a strange case, where i don't recommend using it, because under the hands of an inexperienced artist, the results range from "meh" to several degrees of cringe-worthy.

As for rules regarding the whole lighting and shading thing; we have the basics, shade follows the light bla bla bla, shadow is strongest when its nearer to the light source, but when it comes to the color of the shading in relation to the light, I've seen a lot of people throw around the whole warm color/ cool shade vice versa, but in nature, a warm light produces a warm shadow; same with a cool light.

It's just artistic choice, i guess, but it's always nice to experiment, so either works.
You could either experiment with Multiply or just manually pick the colors yourself.
