    i like bioluminescence...
it occurs in animals sometimes as a defense mechanism, other times as a lure to draw other animals in (like in finding nemo when they swam toward the glowing orb only to find out it was a fucking angler fish...), and for a whole bunch of other reasons according to documentaries i vaguely remember watching and the wikipedia article

on a sidenote, since i mentioned finding nemo, did you guys know clownfish will change gender in a single sex environment to procreate? so, nemo n his dad are gonna bone. go start ruminating on that one...

I'm with you on this, I've done some bioluminescence kayak and paddleboard tours the last few summers and wish I brought shrooms. I plan on seeing the northern lights in the next few years as well.

when i was younger, one of my hobbies was collecting gemstones in different varieties. i had an aquamarine, some alexandrite, moonstone, pearls, opals, and different crystals and amethysts and agates...
i've always found these interesting though... star stones... i'm mostly gonna focus on sapphire here since i never got a fucking sapphire growing up and i really wanted one. basically, star sapphires are flawed by having more titanium oxide in them (i think it's called rutile... it's been years since i looked this shit up)... they're still sapphires and still register as a 9 on the mohs scale, but they have asterisms on the surface which leave these little shapes on them that look like stars. so they're then cut and polished differently to display them as such. transparent stones always get faceted while opaques (like star sapphires) get cut en cabochon

as someone who works with jewellery on a daily basis I can appreciate this. (You are correct with the statement on rutile btw, always nice to see someone who knows their shit). it's a fascinating aberration and isn't just restricted to corundum, which sapphire is a form of as I'm sure you're aware. you can get it in ruby too (also corundum- just with lots of chromium impurities instead of iron) and it has also been noted in other gems like garnet and diopside.

If we're onto gemstones, I'd say that amethysts are my favourite, partly because my birthday is in February, and also because you get amazing looking ones like these

i know about star rubies, but for some reason the sapphires are more aesthetically pleasing to me. i'm not as much of a fan of rubies as i am of garnet (i'm very picky on my red colors... darker is better)
amethysts are beautiful, no doubt... my favorite is opal though

I like alexandrite- which exhibits and extraordinary colour change between natural and artificial light.
my old man got tasked with setting a big one a while back- fell in love with it then
    [IMG]

there's also lapis lazuli which is my absolute favorite. unfortunately the best stuff is found in afghanistan AKA sandnigger central.

beauty is of course in the eye of the beholder. it's actually a very interesting point of debate, at what point does a pink sapphire become a ruby? both are coloured by varying amounts of chromium. as for garnets, they come in all d' colours of d' rainbow. you get your pyropes which are a darker browny red, demantoid which tend towards green, rhodolite which is purple and many more besides.

ah opals... I don't really dig black opal like those you posted, I like the pale, almost translucent ones but they tend to be rather costly. they're fascinating too- it's literally just plates of hydrated silica locked together (thats how you get the different colours- light playing off the different plates)

my high school class ring is alexandrite... whenever i stare at it i wonder for a few seconds what in their composition allows for the color change but then i get too busy staring at it in awe so i haven't looked it up yet.
another one i really, really love is tiger's eye
