Oh god, another self entitled NOBODY.
holy shit the circlejerk of fucking nerds in here.
john cheese whined about this shit over on cracked.com and all i did was walk away thinking, hey, guess what? now, it's cool to be a nerd, to try and like things that build intelligence, etc.meaning the younger generation doesn't have to deal with the bullshit that older generations had to. that's a GOOD thing. bitching about it taking your goddamn gold star away is fucking bullshit and just seems childish as fuck to me.
bitching about that shit is what tompreston did and we all made fun of him for it. total fucking hypocrisy. 'muh childhood suckd n i still hold grudge against teh jawks who ruined it wahhh'.
what about when my soul cries at the unlimited possibilities of the futon? Does the cheese really fly at midnight when the toothpaste is sweeter? My eternal reckoning must activate by the intensity of the cocklesses. If only I has a way to cremate the destroction my inner childrenessesesses.... What is love? Why does that fried cyclops mock me in the middle of the corogates? TELL ME. And I shall reward you with sweet knowlegde that cometh form the waters of the sun...
In all seriousness.
Okay don't get me wrong, I understand your point and I don't entirely disagree with the message here, I want nerds and intellectuals to be praised. That's not really the problem. I mean, I'm the sort of person that for example hates when an underground band gets popular and all the fans go 'well I can't like them anymore because sellouts and original fans and blah blah blah', I think the success of a band should be celebrated, ect.
My problem isn't that, it's more like when people act like they went through something they didn't actually go through. If you want the label you gotta put in the effort. You can't watch ONE single nerd show and then call yourself a nerd when you don't bother expanding your palette to actual intelligent endeavors. That's like those kids who take ONE philosophy class and suddenly they have all the answers and talk about it constantly around people who are more knowledgable about it.
It's pseudo-intellectual phony bullshit and I don't like that whether it's nerd-dom or goth kids or rappers or vain malibu girls or whatever, I don't care. I know this is a stupid note to end on but just... be yourself.
Nerds are fucking losers that spend all their time playing videogames and fantasizing about fictional women
Smart my fucking ass
are we talking about feminism or nerds? Im lost
All of my yes
They do that *because* they're smart. Young bitches don't want a guy who invests wisely, has a four year plan and spends responsibly and thusly has excellent credit which is needed for loans and for buying houses, appliances and furniture for the house! They don't want a guy who'll know what to do when you have an allergic reaction or slip and fall and break your skull.
Nope. They want the quarterback who flunked the sixth grade, can't even count out money, thinks they're gonna get through their whole life by being a high-school/college football player, doesn't even know what a 401k plan is but sure can make those nerds cry! That makes up for everything.
Or in my case, fictional men.
Or in my case...fictional non-human men.
goddamn way to be a stereotypical douchebag. and again, i point you to a similar rant dobson made about fuhtball playhurrzzz
and then point you to jwittz. an ex-high school football player who built a [very clean, rated e for everyone] youtube channel about pokemon and is also a professional pokemon tcg player. he goes to regionals almost every year. JUST THIS YEAR has he expanded his channel to all nintendo (and his let's play channel features more than nintendo) and he was also nominated as the people's choice on king of the nerds on tbs.
meaning he was a jock, prolly got plenty of twat, but also dabbled in shit most jocks would make fun of your ass for. and ~somehow~ stayed on the football team.
prolly cos he didn't wear a suit of OMG MUH FANDUMB and generally had more confidence than an abused fucking dog.
fair enough. i've made similar complaints about female gamers (GURRLLLL GAMEHURZZZ) but more about the 'i want easy dick, i have no real self-confidence, i want a boy to put me up on a pedestaaaal' version of it.
then i grew the fuck up. because i realised thanks to the pokemon fandom alone, that calling yourself a gamer is a one-way ticket to looking like an entitled cuntbag. also there will always be [real?] nerds who think they're the WUN TR00 FANZ but are only latched on to bitch, complain and demand more, more, more.
so yea, fuck the label of 'nerd'. nerds tend to be entitled shitlords who demand so much from their fandoms they end up breaking it in the end by their constant 'needs'.
also i think i maybe got called a nerd like 5 times throughout school. while my nerd friends bitched like children about TEH BULLEEZ i never got shit, prolly cos i had this nonchalant don't-give-a-fuck look. and i left high school right as this 'nerd iz kewl' shit came into a fad. and somehow i doubt that school got permeated by the fad cos it's always like 5 years late on anything.
i either went to an incredibly lax school, and incredibly weird school (other than the fact that there were about 60 black people in a school of 2200) or this shit isn't as bad as people make it out to be if you can just ignore people worth a damn.
or other nerds are your own worst enemy. see the 'entitled shitlords who demand too much shit' section up there. wanna talk about some bullshit? let's talk about how nerds actually fight among themselves to tear one another down then. i think most jocks don't give a single goddamn fuck about nerds for the most part, til they can watch each other tear one another apart. easy, cheap entertainment right there.
edit: and even then, your post begs the question: what the FUCK is a nerd then? are you saying it takes more than being ridiculously obsessed with, idk, star trek to be a nerd? what if that person can speak fluent klingon and has entire bookshelves of star trek books, owns every season on vhs, bluray, dvd AND betamax? like, is that not a nerd?
what about people who own every fucking jrpg in the world, even the ones exclusive to japan, and they learnt japanese just to play these games, but they don't really dabble into other shit? are THEY nerds?
or super computer programmers n shit.
and does watching football on the weekends, or playing football in high school, does that NEGATE being uber-obsessed with star trek? what if you do that and play mtg competitively? AND keep track of gaming? where does the 'football players are jocks' fall off in that case? where does it get canceled out?
what about my bf, who is really good at fighting, knows at least three styles of martial arts, played football and was nominated for the wrestling team (he turned it down tho), is a huge stoner, but plays games like the best of em [including most genres, not just shooters mind] and played mtg quite seriously for a while and also plays dnd. does it negate his nerd card when you take in account he got bitches like it wasn't shit? does it negate his nerd card that he dropped out of school because it bored the shit outta him? where, exactly, does his nerd card get negated, or get approved there? would it get approved if he also larped WHILE playing dnd? or is he already good?
and yea he wears the hand me down clothing and thick rimmed glasses that are all taped up n shit, by prescription. i think it's really cute, but he hates it.
srsly what the fuck makes a nerd by your definition, cos i'm not seeing it. not liking one nerd show doesn't make a nerd, but what if they're OBSESSED with it? how much nerd shit do you have to do to be a nerd? how big does your game collection have to be? how much money do you have to drop on warhammer tabletop figures? where does this line get blurred or is it solid? what DETERMINES your nerddom? am i not a nerd cos i don't larp/play dnd/etc but i have a pretty big game collection and am gonna build my own gaming pc in february? but i don't play mtg, i have a boifranddd and refuse to play dnd with him cos, shit's boring to me. but i play some niche-ass games. and i have an interest in computer networking n shit.
i'm confused here. plz explain. sorry for the long-as-shit post, but that's one thing that bothers me. 'you're not a nerd cos you do one nerd thing'. so, how much nerd shit do you have to do before you get an elusive nerd card?
I like the post for this part, just to be clear.
Reality is not a poorly made teenager movie, nerd.
Bacon shut up no one cares you're gay
I liked Guardian's because it agreed with my views. She talks way too much tho

Was born and RAAAIIIIISED!
Goddamn Bullshit way to send me a fucking novel to read, you need to work on being more concise...
It's pretty much the same concept with fake-nerds.
Okay well good for you. I went to a very inner city school where I literally got mocked once for reading, I wish I was joking, and the guy followed that up with "I only read magazines" like, that's... impressive I guess. Anyway, maybe you never got bullied, but I tried that whole 'ignore people' thing every single day and I got jumped by like six guys in the gym locker room, three during shop class, and a couple during HOME EC of all fucking things. I also got beat up on the bus several times and generally any time I walked down the hall someone was threatening me. I'm voting you went to a lax school.
Yeah that happened to me too actually. I got kicked out of the 'nerd' table at one point for disagreeing with them about their opinions. But their 'own worst enemy'? Eh, maybe once you're out of high school, THEN no one else cares but other nerds. I had my nerd opinion shot down so often eventually I just grew a spine and defended it.
The only reason I am bothering to weed through this fucking post is because I think this is a decent question. It's a nuancy question, like any other personality label, but I personally consider a nerd someone who enjoys any or several stereotypically 'nerdy' subject matter to the point of pursuing it underground (i.e. not just triple-A stuff), who attempts to pursue intellectual hobbies (be they successful or not), and who has at least been incredibly socially awkward or outcast for these things at one point in their life even if they're later able to overcome that. All three of those things are necessary. If I'm being most generous I'd say at least two out of three. Nerdy subject matter would include but is not limited to video games, table-top roleplaying games, science fiction/fantasy books/shows/movies, and comic books and graphic novels. Intellectual hobbies would generally be anything academic or technological.
In my opinion not necessarily. I don't really think it does get cancelled out if it fits those three criteria mentioned above. If you are ONLY obsessed with Star Trek I'd say you're not a nerd regardless of whether or not you're an athlete too, because that's like saying you're a goth JUST because you really like Marilyn Manson or something.
While generally athletes are not nerds, being athletic doesn't mean you're not a nerd, my GM takes cardio kickboxing, kicks ass in it, knows how to fence, and he's probably the nerdiest person I know in terms of having nerdy hobbies and being really awkward.
If they are able to have other hobbies they're not that badly obsessed. If they're not, I dunno maybe. Case by case basis.
I'd say it depends on what kind of nerd shit you're doing, where it ranks on the nerd tier. Where liking a mainstream half-assed stereotype driven show like TBBT isn't very nerdy, being really in to Battlestar Gallactica might get you closer. I don't think there's any single show that's nerdy enough to grant you a free nerd card, but it's like, either you like a lot of sort of nerdy shows, or you like a few REALLY nerdy shows, and yes the line is blurred easily, and this is just my definition of it. I'm sure someone out there thinks I'm not a nerd because I'm not ugly and people like me now, but I think everyone can agree that ONLY liking TBBT and nothing else nerdy does not make you a nerd instantly, right?
I miss the days when this thread was about a crazed feminazi...
Me too but she's not really doing anything else, so...
I love Marilyn Manson and most of my shirts are either black or gray... Does that make me a goth?
STILL a ramblin gamblin dude.
your logic makes no sense to me. but whatever
our definitions differ, because i don't think you have to be poor as fuck (hand me downs n shit) and generally all-around be an awkward asshole to be a nerd. to me, your social skills and all that don't fucking matter. it's all about core interests. if that takes away your nerd cred, or mine, fuck it.
IT'S MARILYN MANSON SPAMMY TIME!!
Uh what? I don't think you actually read what I wrote... I mean, I know it was long but so was YOURS missy. I said nothing about being poor and wearing hand-me-downs... I mean that's bound to make you unpopular in school but unpopular =/= nerdy.
BUT BACONMOOSE, YOU FORGET!!
Oh I like his music vids.
As do I. I also generally think he's a pretty cool guy.
One football player doesn't make up for all of the shit other have done and will do.
And my 'douchebag stereotypes baaaaaawwzz!!1' didn't just come out of the thin air, you know. Stereotypes do come from somewhere and this one would be from the decades of shit they've done to build up that stereotype as well as my own personal experience with them.
Nice try belittling my opinion by associating it with Dobz though, 5 points for effort.
I knew a football player like that. He was basically one of the nerds who happened to play football, but I've known way more who fit that 'douchebaggy stereotype' you were whining about.
okay, so you know that a clique isn't as bad as it's worst members, you want a nobel peace prize or something?
'Sides, nowhere did I say all football players were even like that. My point was that dumb bitches in my age group in HS went for those guys, if anything it was a stereotype about them, not the football players
Too bad too.
What makes me a nerd exactly :U
Come back, Necko.
