I forgot to mention something. He also tweeted how he drew the sprites.
TLDR: Dob is a masochist.
Yeah. Does he even realize there's like millions of tools out there that can be used for making sprites? And no, because he's not a PC user isn't a good excuse. Online tools exist and do work well. Hell, MS Paint does the job.
Some dedicated tools are even free to use. GraphicsGale is now freeware for example.
You know, I kind of feel bad for Dobson and his poor choices on both software and hardware. I could understand limited hardware, if you are like... financially limited, but Dobson uses Macs and... Apple likes to charge a lot for their fancy looks and not much for their hardware. Seriously, if you can afford an average Mac computer, you probably could afford a gaming PC lmao.
Anyways, there's like fancier and more standard 3D modeling & animation programs like ZBrush, Maya, 3DS Max, Lightwave, Blender (free to use), etc.
Beyond Photoshop. Adobe also makes other tools that are handy, like Animate (aka Flash), After Effects, Premiere, and even Character Animator (idk how good that is).
Although yeah, better tools doesn't make your work better automatically. It makes it easier to improve your craft.
You should have posted stuff that's actually better than what Dobson did. You're losing credibility.
For example, if you say that Dobs' palette choices are "dull and lifeless", and then post LSD-style color messes, it's hard to take that criticism seriously.
...I see. That's just your opinion. People have different tastes on what's better or not. Although, that's a hard pill to swallow to say you prefer Dobson's work over something.
Eh. Probably could've went with other examples, but really, Dobson flops more at other mediums.
i found something that reminds me of you guys <3
I meant no offense. I was thinking like you when I started doing art, but then I discovered the hard way that bright colors really aren't that popular, and some other stuff about color theory. That being said, I'm jealous of your green bird.
Since pixel art is pretty much my area, here are my thoughts on his video.
There is a notable lack of contrast in a lot of the coloring in his animation. Many of the sprites in there have coloring tones that are very hard to discern from each other, to the point they might as well not even be there, given they do not add anything significant to the visual appeal of the assets. On top of that, the lack of contrast barely makes the characters pop out from the scene they're in, which is also bad. It becomes very obvious how they just sorta blend in with the background due to poor contrast choices when you take out the colors:
A clashing amount of coloring tones. Duck and Ned have colors that are really low on saturation, while Lady Flame uses primary colors that are way too saturated. It feels inconsistent with itself.
His sprites are completely devoid of any hue shifting whatsoever, which incidentally leaves the tonality of the art as a whole pretty lifeless and boring. If the shading of a subject does not varies in hue from shading to lighting, then that's an issue as a whole:

This is more or less a nitpick, but the fact that the gray tones he used are entirely desaturated bothers me. Making grayscale colors have a bit of a colored tint avoids having them to look dull, and I'm sure this isn't even limited to pixel art either.
His shading is very amateur-ish. So much that it really feels like he picked up the pencil tool and just threw in some random flat shading onto his characters. None of the characters utilize anti alias to look less rough, and he incidentally added banding to the guy's arm.
For those who don't know what banding is, just know that it looks terrible in practice and should be avoided.
So, overall, he seemed to repeat a lot of the mistakes that he did when he sprited that one baseball girl few years ago. You know, the one I edited to actually look more passable.
I don't think his video is entirely bad, but I feel that if Dobson took the time to look up some tutorials on pixel art, then he would be able to produce something much better than what he did in this video.
Hey I can do that too!
If you're a Muslim and swear you're not a rapist or a terrorist, then it is your public DUTY to call this out. If you don't, you are complicit.
What the hell does it have to do with racism? Have I missed something?
you know hindsight, where you look back on a moment and have a new perspective on it? He doesn't have that.
I gotta like how that guy clashes in style with Dobson's character.
As for the whole copyright thing, it's really debatable. Like with Nintendo fangames, it's all fine and dandy if you keep it under the radar. Also selling fanart can be fine, but just don't make it entirely for profit. Not that big companies like Nintendo would really care.
Yeeeeeah, no. Knowing how stubborn Dobson is with techniques, I really doubt he would follow one, even if we did linked him to some tutorials.
This the same guy who went through countless classes of learning to be a professional artist, but ultimately failed at being a professional altogether. Maybe hr started with potential, but he lost it all.
Time for a classic Evil Tom Preston comic!
In other words, keep making new shit. Don't rely on your old stuff to make you money.
Yeeeahhh, that's it! So yeah, I'd argue that his career was already in the shitter by the time this happened to him. If he couldn't be assed to fulfill a simple request of a publisher, someone who could get him a job and jump start his career, then there's nothing that'll help save his career at this point, provided that it ever started to begin with.
What's the problem? I like to keep a window to this thread open all the time!
“This armed break-in by a fan aiming to kill someone is just like when some guy spritzed me in the face with water.”
He really should learn to loosen up that little thing. It's not really that serious as, say, somebody injuring you.
fuck it. Old times.
Even tho that was a long time ago. It's still rather amusing how it is.
I'm sure most people would've just shrug it off, like it just some random prank.
"But it happened to ME! That's what's different!"
If I wasn't ass deep in my work, I'd totally be ressurecting Evil Tom Preston to shit on his tweets.
#DOXon2014 nvr 4get
also @FlamingTofuSquare he did get your books after all
Aww, makes me want to get back into the postcard game again. Maybe I should send another and spritz it with some Chanel Eau de McRib this time.
Apart from resurrecting Evil Tom Preston again, I have noticed that Dobson's site(s) run Project Wonderful ads... which allows people to pay/bid to insert their own ads onto websites.
And right now it basically costs zero dollars to insert an advert onto his site.
Should we send people to this thread? Or the tumblr account that "we" run? Or somewhere else? I mean, at one cent a day, I could forward traffic to "Evil Tom Preston". True, any money spent goes to Dobson, so there's that.
At that point your payments are as insulting as throwing nickles at a stripper. I'd say it's fair game.
Some of those comics aren't related to what he said they're about.
EDIT: fuck the way twitter shows images.
Buy advertising for MAGA hats. At the current rates, you should be able to get a years worth for less than five bucks.
Y don't pics show?!
Pretty sure the hate mail incident never happened.
Prepare your anuses
You left out the best part(aside from the fact that this is something he’s been working on for over a year).
