I read the qu'ran regularly and I just want to point out that nothing in the Islamic holy text is this oppressive towards human behavior.

Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allah would have them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance - [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them.

And that's from the most exhaustive and balanced source I can find

Not that I disagree, but I'd say its certainly a bit...oppressive and sexist.

The Member Formerly Known As Baya mentioned this one to me before. My qur'an states this

"Husbands should take good care of their wives, with(a) [the bounties] God has given to some more than others and with what they spend out of their own money. Righteous wives are devout and guard what God would have them guard in their husbands' absence. If you fear high-handedness(b) from your wives, remind them [of the teachings of God], then ignore them when you go to bed, then hit them(c). If they obey you, you have no right to act against them: God is most high and great." verse 4:34

    (a) bi is interpreted as instrumental rather than casual.
    (b) the verb nashaza from which nushuz is derived means "to become high", "to rise." See also verse 128, where the same word is applied to husbands. It applies to a situation where one partner assumes superiority to the other and behaves accordingly.
    (c) This signifies a single slap, as is clear from the circumstances of the revelation of this verse. See also Abdel Haleem, Understanding the Qur'an 46-54

    Verse 4:128

"If a wife fears high0handedness or alienation from her husband, neither of them will be blamed if they come to a peaceful settlement, for peace is best. Although human souls are prone to selfishness, if you do good and are mindful of God, He is well aware of all that you do."

If you had an special qur'an, I can't comment on it...

I'm quoting from qur'an.com, which is as far as I know, the most exhaustive source

It comes with nice drawings and all

    bitches.

    *************

It will be clear for you, who already have an emotional investment in the matter. For me, that don't give a fuck, is at least dubious.

Only half the translations seem to imply a light beating, all of them imply ownership of the men above the women.

Of course, if your source of interpretation is from a 1999 work, from a guy known as a moderate, odds are that it will be on the nice & smooth side of the coin...

But don't worry, I'm just fucking a bit with you :)

Way worse things are stated in the Bible about wimmenz

My qur'an implies that in a marriage, that they are equal, but men have more control. However, I think that is due to the culture the qur'an comes from (bedu culture). However, in the eyes of God Men and Women are equal which some argue means that they should be equal in secular terms as well.

*The couple depicted above does not reflect the majority of Muslim marriages. If you come to believe that the depiction above is commonplace, please seek immediate psychological help. You may be suffering from a severe form of schizophrenia.
