Pathfinder has way less splatbooks than DnD 3.5 and is a vastly superior game in every way. All your problems with it stem from superficial bull. Anyway, the game will pick back up next week, most likely. Since we're approximately 2/3rds through the first chapter of the campaign, how does everyone feel about it so far. I'm trying to keep combat from bogging the whole thing down by keeping it to a minimum, but I'm open to ideas if anyone feels like they don't like the system or the campaign. It's a bit harder to run than I expected, and even though it's an extremely well-known RPG, may not be the easiest one for beginners. If anyone is interested, I'm also considering writing up some material for a Star Wars D20 campaign. Rules would be similar, though slightly simpler, and canon would be Expanded Universe rather than Prequels/Force Awakens.
If we ever move to a new system, I just want a character creation system that doesn't take an hour to do.
There are worse systems than this. Palladium games, for instance, take hours and hours and hours to make one character due to how detailed and how much flipping through sections of the books it takes. Mind you, Rifts is a fun fucking game with a unique and interesting setting. Literally everything exists in it, from sci-fi to fantasy, so you get armoured knights adventuring alongside cyborgs and cowboys and Russian bear cavalry. But I've spent five hours making a single character in it. And I know how to play the game. On the opposite end of the spectrum, there's Call of Cthulhu. Call of Cthulhu is a horror/mystery RPG based on the works of my favorite author H.P. Lovecraft. You are always merely human, thus it is extremely easy to die. If you get shot, you probably won't survive, and if you do you're in the hospital for weeks. Because of this, the system makes it very easy and quick to make a character. You simply roll stats, pick skills, and that's it. Five minute process, even for noobs. The setting is limited to real-life, though, with Lovecraftian fantasy/horror elements thrown in here and there. A bit easier than DnD but harder than Call of Cthulhu is the Warhammer 40000 roleplaying system (except Deathwatch). It's pretty easy to die in it (except Deathwatch) so easy character creation is a must. Deathwatch is the exception because you play as a Deathwatch Space Marine, and making one of those gets complicated, but you'll probably never die because you're a fucking Astartes and have plot armour out the ass built into the system. All that being said, Star Wars D20 is simpler than DnD in most ways. There's less rules to the side, and there's no magic. Force powers are really easy to use, but you may not be a force using character. You could roll up something as simple as a bounty hunter or a smuggler, give yourself a blaster, and you're set for the game. Other than that, the system is identical to DnD 3rd edition, and the fact that most people are very familiar with the Star Wars setting makes it easier to have a character in mind anyway. If you've ever played Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1 or 2, that was the Star Wars d20 system right there. The only video games ever made that specifically used that variation of the Wizards of the Coast d20 system
I haven't clarified something that I should have. Pathfinder would definitely not be my first choice for a combat-centric RPG, but I'd certainly sit down for a game of it. While I do have some problems with Pathfinder, most of my issues are with Paizo. As for the number of splats, that really depends on how you look at at. Pathfinder has more official splats than 3.5, but once you factor in the OGL, 3.5 easily has more... many of them jokes, like the multiple sex splats available. As for "vastly superior game in every way," I won't argue that point, as it's more a matter of opinion.
He's your favorite author? Mine too, friend, mine too. The only thing I would add to this is that I always rolled up 5 to 10 characters at start. People are going to die, that's a given in this game, so it helps if players have pre-generated characters rolled up to save time out of character and keep the game moving without breaking its pace.
What you didn't wanna run a campaign in a cramped government building surrounded by smelly gypsies and screaming kids? You wanna try next week? I got irl plans tuesday, but im free wednesday.
