Not to mention those damned eyebrows become more and more smarmy.
Subjective, because I know some people die for this 'tumblr' style, but:
This is why I dislike this style. Sure, the lineart is much cleaner, but...
He had a good grasp of basics and nice, realistic, toned down colors and awesome personal stylization going on before he got hit by tumblr. I would've comissioned him if he kept improving in that particular style. But then he added smugfaces, red noses, and made the Jamaican a monkey with a rapeface. Wonderful. Keep on going, tumblr and dA. Teach people how to art.
man, exactly, I hate the tumblr style. For me it feels like these people started off with anime or disney styles, drawing pretty boys and pretty girls. But then they enter tumblr and suddenly their characters get ugly, fat, change ethnicities, their faces get mishshapen and have very visible blemishes - acne, moles, even blackheads on noses and such - because tumblr is all about the ugly and disprivileged.
And I can't get over the nose of the smaller guy (the new version) - what the hell is that even supposed to be? It's not a cartoonish version of a real nose, that shit just doesn't happen outside heavily stylized cartoons like Phineas and Ferb. His old nose made sense, it's the hook/aquiline/roman nose which is a thing, but on the newer pic...? It just makes no sense and clashes with the rest of the pic.
and as for the improvement - it's cheating when people compare a clearly unfinished sketch with a finished pic with neat inks and shading. Of course the newest one will look better because it's fucking finished and obviously more time and effort went into it.
his nose is pip boy's detached leg:
tumblr style is the fucking worst. everyone has greasy-ass hair. if not smug face then 'i am socially anxious qq' face. you know. side glance and tiny smile.
because anxiety is SO FUN!!
Arent they cute
Where the fuck did this tumblr style even come from and why do so many people apparently use it? Did some popular tumblr artist start using it and then others started copying him or her?
Most people call it tumblr style cause it's where it's big nowadays. Maybe it started there, maybe it didn't. But most likely a popular artist or a bunch of bff popular artists that draw the same started using it and then some kids thought 'woaaah cooool' and started using it.
What I hate is excuses like how the red splotches on knees/noses/elbows/shoulders/whatever exist in real life or are stylized shading. The nose and shoulders especially are the most highlighted parts of the body, so I just don't get it. And while the drawing style itself is limited, this red nose/knee/elbow/shoulder thing has spread around more and it's starting to be used in anime or Disney styles or whatever else the random artists draw as.
I don't personally find the appeal for them, but I know some people on here and a lot of people on the internet do, but that's why subjectivity is a thing.
UGH what's with the right guy's facial expression? He looks like he's being held captive and is supposed to pretend he's having a good time but actually his eyes are saying 'please help me. This artist is torturing me. I am an abomination'
my knees, elbows and nose are pretty red irl. i hate it and i think i speak from experience when i say no one finds my pink knees and elbows 'cute' in any way.
there's a reason most women cover that kind of shit up with concealer + foundation. it's because it's ugly.
also, if the nose is red, the chin should also be pink/red. never seen one without the other.
a light pink in those areas on a really pale character works fine because that's natural. but this stark red the colour of the leds on my desktop tower is jarring and completely unrealistic unless the character is suffering from near heat stroke or subzero temperatures.
and red on black people looks fucking ridiculous and makes no fucking sense. shit only works on pale white people. other races don't have red fucking noses unless they're cold as fuck.
This reminds me of Evil Tom Preston's tutorial on consistency. It's a bad idea to randomly fuse realistic aspects with really styled aspects for no rhyme or reason. In this image's case they just slapped an extremely cartoony nose on a slightly more realistic face, it doesn't match up.
Her friend's comment made it worse;
speaking of memes and tumblr.
fucking tired of the color palette meme. i wish they'd try different colors now.
WHY GO BACK TO CRAYONS
Idk. I like the look of crayons/markers/pencils/traditional inking if it's well done, and I know I'm not the only one who likes the traditional look.
What irks me is that the lower half of the body is far worse in the more recent picture, the details are gone, and the only thing that's better is the face. I mean... how does one draw worse a year later traditionally?
For real here, I liked the first one way more. The lineart is a lot cleaner... what the fuck happened in 2 years?
I agree...and look how bow-legged she is in the newer one. I can't get over how her knees are just facing one another.
Is this even drawn by the same person? Why would you make those kinds of mistakes if you clearly already knew some basics?
Now that is a mystery...unless of course it's like MashedPotatoes said: Anime.
someone said my naaaaaaaaame ;-;
The first one looks heavily referenced, hence why it looks better. Then 2 years later they tried it freehand and realized they got no skill.
I should reference more.
It's gotten better, but they ended up half-assing the after image. That annoys the hell out of me.
The improvement would be more obvious if the artist hadn't decided to slap a load of bright colours everywhere.
Maybe they still don't know how to render realistically?
