I miss it. I grew up playing this along with Doom. The bots were smart. The 6-axis controls were mind-blowing at the time.

What the fuck happened to games like this. And FUCK the freespace expansions.

Why was this game doomed to the dustbin when less innovative games which were less enjoyable managed to influence popular culture (Megaman X2) and dominate for the next 2 decades? Also I drink too much. /nostalgia /oldfag

Why is Nintendo still in business? Why does COD do so well when BF is much better? Why is hindsight 20/20, and you're bitching about this game now instead of then? Because fads are fads, and what is often popular at the time over shadows other decent or good content. You were probably first in line for every Megaman at the time and you only just now feel like a fag for it.

    Lol, memories

The first one I remember playing with 6-A freedom was this:

Amazing and huge game in 48Ks...lol, it cracks me up thinking the fucking SIM of my phone has 3x more memory than the whole Spectrum

The first FPS, I dunno...probably Wolfenstein, or maybe Ultima Underworld for PC. And in arcades, Battlezone, of course

It's got some performance issues actually i take this back, i got some weird jumpy framerate problems when i played the demo a few weeks ago but going through it again right now it's much better.

there's plenty of fun to be had.

it's a shooter in space at it's core i think, but there are some rpg-esque elements like looting and upgrading your ship's systems. facilities will have things you can turn on/off like generators that power doors or other things like turrets that you can take control of.

the destructible aspect is interesting, instead of going through the corridors of a mining facility you can blow your way through the asteroid if you don't mind the loss of explosives.

there's also an editor, but i have no experience with it right now.

i don't know if a descent fan can be disappointed, i know i'm not. the flight and combat is slick and fun as hell on its own. there's a 1gb demo out, which upgrades to the full game if you buy it.

Looks like a couple Parallax coders felt dicked over and ported a wholesale version of Descent to third party while giving the finger to Interplay.

If they port to OSX, I'll buy. Or if somebody wants to give me a custom gaming rig, I'll buy.
