Mr. Ginsberg is in the wrong because he was obviously fishing for freebies. If he just wanted to submit feedback and have that be the end of it, a letter or email would suffice. He also claims they "asked for" the feedback. Any company that does that usually does it by way of little comment cards throughout the terminal.
Call center reps are instructed and required to give out consolation prizes to people who call in and complain, even about the tiny things. Anybody who's been on this planet for any appreciable amount of time knows this. The marginal cost of giving Mr. Ginsberg a travel voucher is, well, marginal. It's the extra cup or two of fuel it takes to transport ~200 extra pounds on a plane that's 84,000 pounds when empty.
Additionally, 24 complaints lodged in 8 months? That's 3 complaints a month! I'd have to assume he's a business traveler who has an issue with every flight he's on. That's also tying up a lot of resources at the call center.
NWA is in the wrong for giving an 8 year platinum status member the banhammer. I'd be more inclined to side with them if he was specifically asking for things like bonus miles and travel vouchers. According to the Mr. Ginsberg, he wasn't; he was giving them requested feedback and they offered the freebies well before he was even finished with the story.
It's almost as if they're angry with him because their own policies suck! Yes, platinum-diamond-gold-bismuth members tend to get freebies just a bit easier, and he may have been abusing that, but in reality, nothing stopped them from flagging his account "NO FREE THINGS WITHOUT SUPERVISOR APPROVAL".
They also could have just taken away the bonus miles, but I feel like we'd still be reading about it.
