While the focused attention of all the e-freedom fighters keeps revolving around the oh-so-heinous US-of-A's attempt at turning their fragment of the internet into widespread concentration camp for the unruly, works regarding far larger anti-piracy policy could continue mostly unaffected by forever divided attention of the masses:

Of course, process has moved further already and, thanks to complete media blackout, is on its way towards being ratified by European Parliament - an event that takes place next month.

This is more of a law for actual commercial pirates and counterfeiters, I don't see a threat to anyone's freedom if you don't leave your basement and try to sell windows xp dvd-rs at a market square along with machetes and fake zippos.

Aw. Now you're just ruining this minor chance to make ACTA tinfoil-hattery spread somewhere outside of our local playground. :(

I feel that people starving to death, especially in 3rd world countries, is a far worse problem, but then that's just my opinion

some other major problems are overpopulation, overuse of natural resources, buildup of garbage and pollution, bigotry, and people who refuse to admit that anyone else might have a valid point.

Piracy is worse than all of them, basically the moral stigma has been completely removed from stealing, I expect this attitude to spread rapidly to other crimes, then where will we be?

Piracy is a slippery slope. One day you're downloading 30 gigabytes of the shit music you listen to, and then before you know it you're raiding ships off the coast of Somalia.

As long as they're not eating our food, I don't see how that's a fucking problem.

And China, who didn't sign and probably never will, makes up the rest.

Although my Troll-o-graph is measuring 8.5ppm, I think PerpA is starting to formulate a terrifyingly valid argument.

Nah, brah. You see the so-called intellectuals of the so-called first world have declared that this planet is overpopulated because they wish to binge eat and not feel guilty about it. Starvation is nature's method of regulating the amount of people on the planet.

    Life > Copyright infringement

The biggest problem on Earth is feeding the needy. We have enough food to feed them, its just that we don't want to. Still no matter what, any of these movie actors, Music Producers, etc. will still get money. If you want to stop piracy or slow it down, you have to give a better service than the pirated content. That is what iTunes and Steam is doing.

Feeding the needy is not a problem for anyone but the needy. And actually, we do feed them. A lot. If only we let them die, overpopulation would be gone along with starvation. But hey, we abandon rationality in favor of humanism all the time, why not do it this time as well?

Also, pirating is just an economically rational choice. I would never, ever, ever stop pirating when it comes to single player games or any type of entertainment for that matter. Not even if I was a fucking billionaire. Why? Because I shouldn't be paying for the ability to waste my time. If anything, they should be paying me.

Oh, and life in general isn't worth shit. In fact, it has a negative value because you can only consume resources as long as you're alive, not produce them. So if you really do want to make a positive change, start a suicide club or something.

What? Plenty of people produce net gain in resources (farmer, rocket scientist, etc...).
I appreciate the sentiment, but think it through a little.

Honestly, both are using up existing resources. The farmer just turns biological material that's already there into a consumable form. And rocket scientists, well, until they come up with technology to successfully pull shit from space, they're just wasting rare metals and highly efficient fuels building rockets and then basically throwing them away.

If you really wanna get technical with it matter can be neither created or destroyed, only changed or displaced. So the whole argument makes no point.

The rocket scientist is creating net worth in the long term, where the aggregate of human intelligence will perhaps add up to something great.

I was thinking of it more in a way that the Earth can be seen as a space ship, which posesses only a limited amount of supplies. But eh, whatever.

We broke seven billion in world pop. a few months ago. I heard somewhere that at this rate we'll be facing worldwide food shortages in a few decades. I say let the shit covered africans starve.
