They say Hollywood stories are dumbed down to accommodate the American public. Well, I think there is something that needs to be addressed which is the result of a dumbed down America. You guys remember when the US national government bailed out all those major corporations, right? It actually happened twice, or three times depending on how you look at it. Anyway, there was a buzz phrase going around about the bail outs being "socialism for the rich, capitalism for the poor." That, plus the claims that Canadian medical care is "socialist" has led me to the assumption that (most) Americans think socialism is the subsidisation of something. I would like to state, for the record, that socialism and subsidisation have nothing to do with one another. Subsidisation implies that there is autonomy or independence somewhere in the economy so it doesn't make much sense to call it socialism since socialism is a form of totalitarian government in which everything is owned by the government. Not merely controlled, mind you, but owned outright. Now, I'm not here to pick on Americans, I know that there are probably just as many (in terms of percentage) Australians who think the same. My point is that this thinking, these buzz sentences and buzz words, are hurtful to the collective psyche of Humanity. It makes us dumber and less informed as a whole.
